The great benefit of consistency and how it helped me.
Growth
I’d be talking about consistency today because it helped me to be creative.
I find it hard to talk in public, instead of doing it the wrong way, I decided to let my work speak for me and it did.
Consistency helped my journey as a brand identity designer, I was able to build a solid trust for my personal brand. I got referrals from friends who saw the energy I put into showing myself out there. I got job offers without pitching, I got attention from fellow creators and all those were achieved by the level of consistency I put into my craft.
Being consistent is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to become.
Starting out as a designer back then in 2020, I took the design software serious; spent hours learning how to design a logo using Corel draw but watching YouTube videos, I noticed all videos centered around Adobe Illustrator; because I want to help myself, I installed Illustrator and I started my journey afresh November 2020.
Consistency pushed me. YouTube drew my attention to the design software they use in tutorial videos and it helped my journey as a designer.
Now, what is consistency?
According to the English dictionary; consistency is the way in which a substance holds together; thickness or viscosity.
A lot of creatives mistake consistency for daily post on social media platforms. Consistency is way more than that, consistency is too help growth, so if you are being intentional and consistent about your growth then consistency is not posting everyday.
Consistency is equal to growth in my book but then its more of showing your audience your growth process and how you get things done, this helps in reaching your target audience.
After several attempts to be a better designer, I jumped into a competition late 2020 and I won. To be honest, checking the logo I did, I think I won because I was the only designer there but the win boosted my energy, I wanted to know more, do more and be a better designer.
March 2021, a friend reached out to me; he wanted to work on a logo designer. I worked on it and it came out nice(then), I was happy.
He trusted me with the design because I post everyday on WhatsApp then, by posting everyday, I work everyday tirelessly because I had the hunger for growth.
If you post everyday and you are not growing or we see the same thing over and over again, we will definitely be tired but if there are signs of growth, improvement in your works … We will definitely be interested in your work and other things you do.
After the March 2020 logo design, I couldn’t get another gig but that did not discourage me from working on myself. I had sleepless night creating logo designs for my Instagram page and to show people that I’m a designer.
The consistency gave me sits among designers I look up to, taught me new things, I was able to express myself using my work and skill.
Let’s look at it from this angle; a potential client will solidify his/her trust in your work if you are consistent about it.
Last year{2021} August, I started building my illustration skill and I started posting on LinkedIn; after 1 month, a client reached out to me after 3 months of following my work, the project was my biggest project.
Same thing happened this year, a friend that I've been talking to since December 2021 gave me a project March 2022 after series of conversations; he saw my 2021 logofolio and he decided to reach out; this happened because he saw my consistency and energy when it comes to my skill as a designer.
This is the reward for being consistent. But consistency will make you feel like a loser, while you’re in it. Just remember — you have to shovel through a lot of trash before you strike gold. Most people will never have the consistency to overcome the tiresome repetition that long.
It’s OK If You Can Only Put in a Few Hours a Day
In summary, consistency is basically you showing us your growth process, not you posting the same kind of work everyday. Your work need to entertain while performing it’s duties which is the functionality.
Benefits of Consistency
It helps improve commitment; you posting your work everyday helps you get addicted and committed to the process and challenges. You can easily spot problems and come up with solutions because of the consistent practice.
It helps professionalism; your consistent actions make you see the mistakes and problems with your skill. Recently, I discovered I needed to pay attention to more details while working, I could notice that because of the consistency I put into my craft.
Repetition can be boring or tedious — which is why so few people ever master anything.” -Hal Elrod, The Miracle Morning
Consistency put you ahead of challenges; with the help of showing up everyday, you can predict problems because you are used to the routine, you can give sharp answers to questions because you have gotten solid knowledge from different experiences.
Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.-Winston S. Churchill
As long as you prioritize your working time and produce as much as possible while respecting your other priorities, you’re still outworking your competition(which is yourself)
Master your time so you can maximize your production with what time you have. Do what you can with the hours you have.
Do this everyday
“You Can Outlast The Lucky Ones and Outwork The Lazy Ones”
There are millions of people out there who are far better designers than I am. They’re better at grid usage, can speak fluent English, make a better sales pitch, and do better work.
What can make me better than them is my consistency, everyday work, being open to criticisms and improving my skill.
So, I work harder.
